You will find a spacious and bright living room with a sunny breakfast nook, the original brick fireplace with a brand new fireplace insert, elegant period moldings, narrow red beech floors. This was obviously a marvelous place to entertain the prominent doers and shakers in the bustling Port of Washburn around the turn of the century. And so they did. In those days Washburn was twice its size with a booming economy. Steamboats ran daily between Washburn, Bayfield, La Pointe and Ashland. The town had a 600-seat opera house, 15 saloons and its own brewery. The AC Probert House was built to showcase the owner's prominence and good taste. The other lasting element of AC Probert's vision is Washburn's spectacular historic museum; originally the city's most magnificent bank. It was built by banker, Probert, shortly after he completed this home.
